Production Switching

What is a “production switcher”?

In video production, a production switcher is a hardware or software component that enables a director or producer to oversee and seamlessly transition between various camera shots. The primary used case for production switchers is live multicamera events. Live productions typically have multiple cameras or video sources switched in real time. Additionally, post-production studios commonly employ them for editing purposes.

Production switchers integrate diverse sources, including studio video, graphics, and remote video, to create a unified content output for transmission. They typically consist of two primary sections:

  1. Input selection matrix
  2. Mixing, wiping, and keying functionalities

Utilizing a video switch can significantly enhance the overall quality of your production, particularly when employing multiple cameras or diverse video sources.
